The Not-So Skinny Jeans For Curvy Women
I have many memories of shopping for jeans as a child and none of them are pleasant. There were many styles at our fingertips those days such as low-rise, hip huggers, mid-rise, boyfriend jeans, girlfriend jeans to infinity and beyond – but throughout my childhood, every style seemed to be unfair to my figure.
Until the glorious high-waisted skinny jean descended from the heavens and began to live among us - Again! After years of riding high, this style is now being deemed as the bedridden former quarterback of denim, clinging on for dear life as it watches its younger and faster constitutes steal the limelight. But if you ask me, Nobody puts skinnies in a corner.
While the skinny jean will always be my fail-safe go-to, I thought it’d be fun to share a few different styles I consider the side pieces to my skinny jeans. All of these styles brought a new level of confidence my way. There’s also something very refreshing about switching up your denim routine.
So Let’s take a look a the new styles I have formed entanglements with this Spring…
Cropped Jeans
At first, I thought, am I cool enough to wear straight cropped jeans? How in the world do I style these? So Here’s the deal – they are easier than you think. You can rock them with your favorite pair of booties or a strappy heel like you see here. Heels, mules, or even flats can work perfectly with this style. If you’re looking for a style of denim that can transition perfectly into spring, these are what you’ve been missing.
Mom Jeans
Ok, a moment of honesty! I was nervous to try mom jeans and I was equally as nervous to see if my legs would fit into these cuties from H&M. My previous thought — only moms can wear these. New thought: moms are superwomen and I think I’m a woman that’s pretty super so, mom jeans are for me. These are high-waisted, and a little narrow in the leg, and longer in the butt area. While you will commonly see mom jeans styled with sneakers, I prefer them with heels to give my legs and butt a lift as this style can tend to make you a little flatter on the backside.
Flare Jeans
The great predecessor of the skinny jean. Can we talk for a minute about why flare jeans disappeared from the jean scene for a little while?! I will argue with the best of them that flare jeans are hands down the most flattering when it comes to elongating the legs and making even a 5’4 shortie like me can look at least 5’8. I love that this style works for my body as well as my height. These are also an amazing option if you prefer a longer inseam. There are two ways I love to style flare jeans. One is with heels to add extra elongation to my legs and to prevent my jeans from dragging on the ground. The second option is to pair it with strappy tie sandals and wrap the straps around the outside of the jeans. While this doesn’t work for every look or very shoe, it certainly gives a very cool flair to your look - no pun intended.
Baggy Mom Jeans
Remember baggy jeans from the ’90s? You know Aaliyah, TLC, Jada Pinkett type of baggy. Baggy jeans sound really good after a year of being quarantined and have nothing but time to indulge in our refrigerators. For anyone that’s not ready to slip back into a slimmer fit, this throwback denim style is perfect for you! Baggy jeans have grown in popularity throughout 2020 and I don’t think they’re going anywhere for a while. Baggy jeans are essentially slightly oversized boyfriend/mom jeans. They’re roomier throughout the hips, butt, and legs, but fit the waist like normal jeans. Size is key when trying this style because you don’t want to get a pair that makes you look bulky.
Since these jeans are so baggy, I kept the volume on top to a minimum. I’m wearing a fitted turtle neck because it’s cropped! Whatever you wear on top, keep it simple. Think clean like a streamlined sweater, a t-shirt, or blouse tucked or half-tucked in. For a third layer, you can throw on a sleek jacket. There are tons of ways to style these jeans!
So there you have it, four not-so skinny jeans. Are you breaking up with your skinny jeans this year ?! If so, which styles are you gravitating towards?!
